ACA Thanksgiving Celebration

Dear ACA members and friends,

 

This is a reminder for the Thanksgiving event coming up next Saturday (11/22).  We are working on the preparation and are looking forward to the your support and participation.  There will be many volunteers being recognized on that night, these are the people who help out with our programs on a regular basis.  There will also be many entertainments for you to enjoiy so please come and join us with your whole family.  The cost is $5 general and $3 for kid/senior (10yrs/60yrs) admission.  

Also, I am sending this donation request for Board member Margaret Wong (event copordinator) for you to donate $20 for one turkey for the event.  She has received seveal positive responses already.  If you can, please let me or Margaret know whether you can contribute $20 cash and we will take care of the turkey.  The turkey will be named after you as a recognition of your support.  Attached please find the event flyer and again, hope we all can get together at this event as a big family.

"Star Luster" November 2008 Ballroom Dance Party

"Star Luster" Monthly Ballroom Dance Party on Nov. 29, 2008

"Star Luster" monthly ballroom dance party sponsored by CAGD Northern Activity Center, Western Activity Center (CAGD NAC, WAC) and Chinese Community Center (CCC) for Nov. 2008 will be held in the evening of Saturday 11/29/2008, and is open to public (not limited to Chinese
 Community).

During the first half hour at the beginning of the dance party, the basic steps of international ballroom dances will be taught to dance lovers. It is very good and helpful for the beginners interested in ballroom dance. The two pair of lucky lottery tickets will be drawn on site to encourage attendants' suggestions and comments for the dance party better and successful. All of you who like to dance are invited to have a good time, meet new friends, promote physical health, and share the enjoyment of dance with beautiful music.

Ai-De-Cai-Hong - A Special Drama

Dear community leaders,

I am very proud to share with you that our local play writer, Shihan Chen, and many great artists will present us a special drama, Ai-De-Cai-Hong, on November 1, Saturday, 7:00 PM, at Oakland University. To show your strong support and appreciation to our artists' three-month diligent and dedicated work, I would like to ask all of you to forward the attachment to your members or email list once a week until the performance day. Please let me know if you are willing to help to sell tickets for us and I will add your name and phone number in the flyer. Please also let me know if you want to have some tickets for your family.

Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote - Michigan

The Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote - Michigan has registered close to 1000 voters of all Asian ethnic backgrounds, in our first year of existence! Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to make this possible.

But that doesn't mean our job is done. This election is too important. We have twenty-eight days left to make sure these new voters as well as other Asian American voters in Michigan know when and where to vote on Election Day, their voting rights, and if applicable, how to vote absentee! Chinese Lessons

The Chinese Community Center is now offering small group Chinese lessons at multiple levels.  All the courses provide an excellent opportunity for you to learn the Chinese language as well as Chinese culture.  Classes will be taught in objective and interactive manner.  Please click on this link for details.

Who's Who in Asian American Communities Leaders & Legends Awards

Sachi Koto Communications, http://www.sachikoto.com/, in Atlanta hosts annual WWAAC (Who's Who in Asian American Communities Leaders & Legends Awards). This year, it was held in Los Angeles in August. We have two outstanding recipients of the award from Michigan, Wally Tsuha and Richard Chow-Wah. Sook Wilkinson wrote a brief Asian American history which was produced as a mini-documentary, shown at the awards ceremony.

Art Director, Splendor of the East 2009

 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR RECRUITMENT FOR SOE 2009

The Board of Directors of Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA) seeks candidates for the position of Artistic Director (AD) for the Splendor of the East (SOE) which will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009.  The SOE is the only Asian Multi-Cultural performance in Michigan.  The position becomes open October 1, 2008.

The position is neither a permanent nor a full time job. The selected candidate will provide the necessary time and effort required to present a cultural production, consistent with the CAPA-established theme, at the highest possible standard of excellence in the areas of musicality, direction and performance.

Below are the AD responsibilities and the required AD attributes of the ideal candidate.

A compensation package will be offered consistent with the CAPA-budgeted fee.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR (AD) RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for all artistic functions of the Splendor of the East 2009 (SOE 09) including selection of performing groups and programming of all other artistic support personnel.
• Articulates a clear artistic vision consistent with CAPA-established theme for the SOE 09 and defines performance standards consistent with skills and abilities of the performing groups in order to achieve the highest possible standards of excellence in the areas of musicality, direction and performance.
• Work cooperatively with CAPA Board of Directors and support the overall plan which will be executed by the chairperson and/or co-chairperson of the SOE 09 Planning Committees.
• Work closely with the CAPA Executive Director in establishing and achieving budgeted financial goals.
• Conduct appropriate number of choreographer meetings and rehearsal sessions to adequately prepare the performing groups for the SOE 09 cultural show on May 1, 2009.

ARTISTIC ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

• Strong background and experience in dance and art.
• Deep commitment to ensuring strong and positive relationship with performers.
• Creativity and imagination, and the ability to challenge and inspire the various ethnic organizations artistically.
• Commitment to respecting the history and traditions of the Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA).
• Good relationships and contacts with the dance world.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

•  Ability to provide leadership in formulating, articulating and achieving the theme of the Splendor of the East (SOE).
• Character exhibiting energy, maturity of judgment, positive attitude and sense of humor.
• Strong communication skills.

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

• Ability to create and develop strong positive relationship within the CAPA organization.

Scholarships for APA students: Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS)

My name is Kara Fukumoto and I currently serve as the Outreach Coordinator for the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program in the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF). If you are not familiar with GMS, the program is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  It was established in 1999 to provide outstanding low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. Language Instructors needed

Hi CAPA Member,

I think we promoting the beauty of the cultural of the Asian Pacific People that we have to hire six people to present their native country to over 600 hundred participants in our summer programs and two language instructors to teach over 180 kids & adults basic communication in Japanese and now with our International Club we getting more requests for Japanese and and Chinese instructors we need your help. For immediately open position we need a Japanese teacher for 2 hours,3 days a week for one school year start September 15 to June 15,2009. Please help in getting the information to whom may concern .
