This year, it was held in Los Angeles in August. We have two outstanding recipients of the award from Michigan, Wally Tsuha and Richard Chow-Wah. Sook Wilkinson wrote a brief Asian American history which was produced as a mini-documentary, shown at the awards ceremony.

Art Director, Splendor of the East 2009

 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR RECRUITMENT FOR SOE 2009

The Board of Directors of Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA) seeks candidates for the position of Artistic Director (AD) for the Splendor of the East (SOE) which will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009.  The SOE is the only Asian Multi-Cultural performance in Michigan.  The position becomes open October 1, 2008.

The position is neither a permanent nor a full time job. The selected candidate will provide the necessary time and effort required to present a cultural production, consistent with the CAPA-established theme, at the highest possible standard of excellence in the areas of musicality, direction and performance.

Below are the AD responsibilities and the required AD attributes of the ideal candidate.

A compensation package will be offered consistent with the CAPA-budgeted fee.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR (AD) RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for all artistic functions of the Splendor of the East 2009 (SOE 09) including selection of performing groups and programming of all other artistic support personnel.
• Articulates a clear artistic vision consistent with CAPA-established theme for the SOE 09 and defines performance standards consistent with skills and abilities of the performing groups in order to achieve the highest possible standards of excellence in the areas of musicality, direction and performance.
• Work cooperatively with CAPA Board of Directors and support the overall plan which will be executed by the chairperson and/or co-chairperson of the SOE 09 Planning Committees.
• Work closely with the CAPA Executive Director in establishing and achieving budgeted financial goals.
• Conduct appropriate number of choreographer meetings and rehearsal sessions to adequately prepare the performing groups for the SOE 09 cultural show on May 1, 2009.

ARTISTIC ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

• Strong background and experience in dance and art.
• Deep commitment to ensuring strong and positive relationship with performers.
• Creativity and imagination, and the ability to challenge and inspire the various ethnic organizations artistically.
• Commitment to respecting the history and traditions of the Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA).
• Good relationships and contacts with the dance world.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

•  Ability to provide leadership in formulating, articulating and achieving the theme of the Splendor of the East (SOE).
• Character exhibiting energy, maturity of judgment, positive attitude and sense of humor.
• Strong communication skills.

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

• Ability to create and develop strong positive relationship within the CAPA organization.

Scholarships for APA students: Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS)

My name is Kara Fukumoto and I currently serve as the Outreach Coordinator for the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program in the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF). If you are not familiar with GMS, the program is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  It was established in 1999 to provide outstanding low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. Language Instructors needed

Hi CAPA Member,

I think we promoting the beauty of the cultural of the Asian Pacific People that we have to hire six people to present their native country to over 600 hundred participants in our summer programs and two language instructors to teach over 180 kids & adults basic communication in Japanese and now with our International Club we getting more requests for Japanese and and Chinese instructors we need your help. For immediately open position we need a Japanese teacher for 2 hours,3 days a week for one school year start September 15 to June 15,2009. Please help in getting the information to whom may concern .
