The Asian & Pacific Islander American 2007-2008 scholarship Application

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) has a vision to see that all Asian and Pacific Islander Americans who wish to pursue higher education have that opportunity, regardless of their ethnicity, national origin or financial means. As a leader in our community, you have the opportunity to support that vision.  APIASF asks that you help identify students, who have the academic achievement and leadership potential, to apply for the APIASF scholarship.

Encourage students to visit www.apiasf.org to begin the application process (beginning Monday, October 16, 2006) or get more information on APIASF. If you would like to have APIASF applications mailed to you please contact Bindi Patel at bindi@apiasf.org.  All applications must be submitted on-line by January 12, 2007, 11:59 pm EST or postmarked on or before January 12, 2007.

To be eligible for the APIASF scholarship, students must:

* Be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity as defined by the 2000 Census.
* Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, legal permanent resident, or a citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau.
* Be a first-time, incoming college student in the Fall of 2007.
* Be enrolled full-time in a two or four-year program at a U.S. accredited college or university in the U.S., Guam, American Samoa , and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands for the 2007-2008 school year (enrollment is verified in the Spring of 2007). In the Freely Associated States, this includes the Community College of  Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau .
* Have a cumulative, unweighted grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the G.E.D. equivalent.

The APIASF application involves two parts, one part completed by the student and the other by a Recommender; an educator, advisor, community leader, or employer.  The entire application packet must be submitted in one method, completion either on-line or submitted by mail.

2007 Korea Summer Institute Program
Open for US Graduate Students in the fields of Science and Engineering

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Korea Science and
Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) have been supporting the Summer Institute in
Korea Program under the agreement between the US government and Korean
government since 1995.

The program is to provide US graduate students in science and engineering
field with first-hand research experience and an orientation to the Korean
science, technologies, industries and culture. The primary goals of the
program are to introduce students to Korean science and engineering in the
context of a research laboratory, and to initiate personal relationships
that will better enable them to collaborate with Korean counterparts in the
future.

Eligibility of applicant: US graduate student (US Citizen or permanent
resident) in science and engineering field

Duration: About eight weeks, from June to August, 2007

Host Organization: Universities, government-supported research institutions
and private industry-affiliated research institutions in Korea

Allowances and Expenses
-   Round-trip Airfare
-   Stipend:  $4,000
-   Living allowances: 2,000,000 won (about $2,000)
-   Health Insurance, etc.

Full Time Coordinator Position

Start Date: January 2007
Salary Range: 45,000-50,000

The Shanti Project is a community-based initiative to develop, implement, and evaluate a broad communications campaign to promote violence-free relationships in the Gujarati community of Southeast Michigan. It is led by a Community Action Team of Gujarati residents and administered by the University of Michigan School of Social Work. This four-year project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is in its second year.

We will be hiring a full-time Coordinator (40 hours/week) to begin working with our team in January 2007. The Coordinator will be responsible for leading campaign planning and implementation, including working with our partner social marketing agency and the Community Action Team. This position requires supervision of staff, report-writing, and budget management.

We are looking for candidates with experience in:
- Community-based work with immigrants (preferably South Asian)
- Domestic violence prevention
- Communications

Association of Chinese Americans' Get out the Asian Votes Sessions
October 27, 2006 and November 1, 2006

Association of Chinese Americans (ACA) is getting the Chinese voters to come out and get educated on the voting process as well as explainations on the 5 proposals.

There are two meetings at Chinese Community Center (CCC) on getting out the votes: Friday October 27th from 7-9pm and Wednesday November 1st from 7-9pm.

ACA has invited the following legislators to make an appearance and is currently waiting for their responses:

    - Rep. Hoon-Yung Hopgood
    - Senator Nancy Cassis
    - Senator Hansen Clark
